The Best Fabric For a Down Comforter’s Shell

We recommend silk, silk/cotton or 100% cotton for your down comforter’s shell.  The reason for this is, these types of thread can be woven into high thread counts and since they are all natural, they allow the down to breathe. 

Does thread count make a difference?  It definitely can.  For down comforter shells to be ‘downproof’, only tightly woven high thread count fabrics should be used. Also, the higher the thread count, the lighter weight of the shell.

Take this into consideration. The weave of the fabric also plays a big role in the weight of the shell.  A high thread count plain-weave cotton batiste shell will be lighter in weight than a higher thread count sateen weave shell. You want the best lofting for your down fill and a light weight shell will allow that, helps make you more comfortable.
