What Is The Difference Between a Comforter and Duvet?

Any quilted bedcover qualifies as being a comforter. In other words, two outer layers and an inner layer of padding held together by a pattern of stitching, that sits on a sheet for warmth and comfort.

All sorts of filling are used, down and especially goose down being especially famous for being the most comfortable and luxurious due to the light weight and ability to conform to the body.

The term “duvet” is sometimes used to refer to a comforter cover rather than the comforter itself. Usually though, it means a single piece of bedding used in place of both a blanket and sheet.  “Duvet” is French for “down” and duvets originally were always down filled, though in modern usage can have other fillings.
