Care of Down Products

Down products can be difficult to clean, so here are some suggestions to make your task a little easier.  This information pertains to down comforter, down pillows, down jackets and featherbeds as well.

To start with, always try to keep your down materials protected from all types of elements, such as weather, people and pets.   If you can, always keep your down items covered to keep out the dirt, dust and body oils. Pillow protectors are great to use and they work very well at protecting your items.  Comforter covers are also available and they most definitely extend the life of your products.  Then you should only have to wash the cover and not your down item.

You don’t want to wash your down comforter any more much more often than every 5 to 7 years.  If it’s truly taken care of and protected, you should really never have to wash it.  Washing down materials too often can lead to the breakdown and wear and tear.

An easy way to care for your down comforter is to shake it weekly.  This keeps the down from settling in bunches.

Another great way to refresh your down comforter is to air it outside if you can from time to time. Hanging your comforter from a clothesline enables the fresh air to blow right through it.

With proper care, your down comforter could last a lifetime.

That is especially so if it is used with a comforter cover, only laundered when necessary and properly stored.
