What is the meaning of fill power?
This tells you the quality and insulation power of the down filling. The higher the fill power, the stronger and of better quality is the material. Fill power is basically how well the down expands, this is also called ‘loft’. The more the loft expands, the more warm air is trapped in the down, providing you with a warmer, more comfortable comforter.
You can compare products that weigh the same but have different fill powers. It’s the value of the insulation power that is important. They may weigh the same. But one product has a fill power of 500 and another has a fill power of 650. The product with the fill power of 650 will be lighter and warmer than the one with the 500 fill power.
Products are not necessarily more expensive just because they have a lot of fill and are heavier. The importance when purchasing down is not the quantity of fill, but the quality of the fill power.. When you have a comforter that is warmer and lighter, that means the down is of higher quality. You want your comforters to be light and airy, not necessarily bulkier and heavier. Wouldn’t you choose to have a comforter that is lightweight and warmer with a higher fill power, than a heavier comforter with a lower fill power that doesn’t keep you as warm?
So keep in mind, it’s the fill power that should be more important to you. That is if you want to purchase a higher quality product, that is lighter in weight and keeps you the warmest.
